A Year In Fashion: 2016 Recap

2016 is almost over and we start to think about everything that happened during the last twelve months, and just like the world itself, the fashion industry was full of big events. Here is a brief summary of the most important ones.

ES: El 2016 ya se termina y comenzamos a pensar en todo lo que hicimos y sucedió durante estos doce meses. Y al igual que el mundo, la industria de la moda también estuvo repleta de grandes acontecimientos. He aquí un breve resumen acerca de los más importantes.

CHANEL IN CUBA
Karl Lagerfeld chose the beautiful city of La Habana to present Chanel's Resort 2017 collection, being this the first time an event of that quality took place in Latin America. On the runway, we could see models strolling in loose pants, tweed jackets, organza dresses and lots of stripes in a wide colour palette that went from neutrals and mustard to red and green, which matched perfectly with the festive mood of the island. Definitely, a show to remember.

ES: Karl Lagerfeld eligió como destino para la presentación de su última colección crucero la bella ciudad de La Habana, siendo la primera vez que se organiza un evento de este calibre en Latinoamérica. En la pasarela vimos a las modelos desfilar en pantalones sueltos, chaquetas de tweed, vestidos de organza y muchas rayas en una amplia paleta de colores que iban desde los neutros y mostazas hasta rojos y verde, los cuales hacían juego con el espíritu festivo de la isla.Definitivamente un show para recordar.

SEE NOW, BUY NOW
A different way of selling that started last year but has widely grown this in 2016 with brands like Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors and Rebecca Minkoff, to name a few, was something to talk about during September's Fashion Week. But, what is it about? It's a new sales strategy that allows costumers to buy a collection (or selected pieces), online and in stores, immediately after the fashion show. Burberry was the pioneer and as time goes by there are more brands joining the trend.

ES: "Vea ahora, compre ahora" una manera distinta de vender que comenzó el año pasado ha crecido ampliamente en el 2016 con marcas como Tom Ford, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors y Rebecca Minkoff, por nombrar algunas, ha sido algo que ha dado que hablar durante la Fashion Week de Septiembre. Pero ¿de qué se trata? Es una nueva estrategia de ventas que consiste en permitirle al consumidor comprar una colección (o determinadas prendas) justo después de haber sido presentada, tanto online como en tiendas. Burberry fue la pionera y cada vez con más las firmas que se suman. 

FENDI'S DOLCE VITA
Karl Lagerfeld celebrated 50 years in the Italian brand in a big way. For his Couture 2017 collection, he chose the magnificent Fontana di Trevi, in Rome, as a location for the show.
On a glass catwalk, which allowed us to see the water that flowed underneath, the models wore the most beautiful garments made of lace, embroidery, transparencies, ruffles, floral prints and, of course, fur, the characteristic texture of the firm.

ES: Con motivo del 50 aniversario de Karl Lagerfeld en la marca italiana, Fendi presentó en la Fontana di Trevi, en Roma, con un desfile de ensueños su colección Couture 2017. Sobre la pasarela de vidrio que dejaba ver el agua corriendo por debajo, se lucieron prendas bordadas, flores, transparencias,volados y, por supuesto, pieles, la textura característica de la firma.

DESIGNERS WALK OUT
Heidi Slimane confirmed it's departure from Yves Saint Laurent in April, Peter Copping left Oscar de La Renta in July and Peter Dundas said goodbye to Roberto Cavalli this October.

ES: Heidi Slimane confirmó su salida de Yves Saint Laurent en Abril, Peter Copping dejó Oscar de La Renta en Julio y Peter Dundas le dijo adiós a Roberto Cavalli en Octubre.

THE NEW DIOR
On the other hand, Maria Grazia Chiuri debuted in Dior becoming the first woman to head the french fashion house. The Spring-Summer 2017 collection was an ode to feminism, filled with tulles, lace, floral appliques, dresses, skirts and feminine tuxedos in black, white and red followed by others with transparencies in silver and gold. But there was an outfit that resumes everything: a printed t-shirt with the quote "we should all be feminists" paired up with a blue tulle skirt that was one of the most photographed looks of the show.

ES: Por otra parte, Maria Grazia Chiuri debutó en Dior convirtiéndose en la primera diseñadora mujer de la casa francesa. La colección de primavera-verano 17 fue una oda al feminismo, llena de tules, encaje, apliques florales, vestidos, faldas y trajes ultra femeninos en blanco, negro y rojo seguidos por otros con transparencias en dorado y plateado. Pero si hay un outfit que lo resume todo es una remera estampada con la frase "todos deberíamos ser feministas" acompañada por una falda de tul azul, el cual pasó a ser uno de los looks más fotografiados del desfile.

GOODBYE FRIENDS
Just like in life itself, in the fashion world, not everything is a bed of roses and wonderful outfits. Over the year we lost some talented people from the industry that will live in our memory forever.
The 25th of July we had to say goodbye to one of the best street style photographers of all times, Bill Cunningham and exactly one month later to the french designer Sonia Rykiel, who popularised the knit sweater known as "the poor boy sweater". Finally, the past 22nd the editor in chief of the Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani, left us due to a health problem.
Three incredible artists that are now part of fashion history.

ES: Al igual que en la vida misma, en el mundo de la moda no todo es color de rosa y outfits despampanantes. En el transcurso del año hemos perdido a varias personas llenas de talento que vivirán en nuestra memoria por siempre.
El 25 de Julio despedimos a unos de los mejores fotógrafos de street style de todos los tiempos, Bill Cunningham y exactamente un mes después a la diseñadora francesa Sonia Rykiel, quien popularizó el jersey de punto conocido como "the poor boy sweater". Finalmente, el pasado 22 nos dejó la editora en jefe de la revista Vogue Italia, Franca Sozzani, a causa de un problema de salud.
Tres increíbles artistas que ahora forman parte de la historia de la moda.

 TOMMY X GIGI
Gigi Hadid, the model of the year according to the British Fashion Council, teamed up with Tommy Hilfiger to create her first capsule collection that includes not only clothes but footwear and accessories too. It debuted at the F/W Fashion Week with a carnival and was chosen by the brand to start in the "see now, buy now" trend. The result? A total success. The crowd was fascinated by all the navy pieces that went from statement jackets and oversize sweaters to bodysuits and the classic striped t-shirts.

ES: Gigi Hadid, la modelo del año según el British Fashion Council, se alió con Tommy Hilfiger para crear su primera colección cápsula que incluye, además de ropa, footwear y accesorios. La misma fue presentada durante la Semana de la Moda de New York con un desfile de ambientación carnavalesca que fue elegido por la casa para iniciarse en el "see now, buy now" ¿El resultado? ¡Un éxito! La multitud quedó fascinada con el estilo navy de las prendas, que iban desde statement jackets y oversize sweaters hasta bodysuits y clásicas remeras a rayas. 
Una dupla que sorprendió y promete seguir haciéndolo el año entrante.
